3-Day Overnight Sea Kayaking Adventure

A Unique Adventure across Frenchman's Bay

Here at Aquaterra Adventures we have teamed up with Main Stay Cabins in Winter Harbor to bring you a spring or fall adventure of a lifetime. We will depart from our private docks in Bar Harbor a head across Frenchman's Bay to Winter Harbor for an overnight stay at the waterfront Main Stay Cabins. On the way to Winter Harbor we will explore the breathtaking Porcupine Islands as well as Ironbound Island, and Grindstone Neck. If conditions permit, we aim to paddle around Schoodic Peninsula, returning back to the same accommodations for the 2nd night. The last day of this adventure will lead you back to Bar Harbor.

The Porcupine Islands are the focus of our paddling during our busy season. They offer spectacular views of the mountains of Acadia National Park, as well as the islands themselves. Aside from the dramatic cliffs and views in the Islands there is also abundant wildlife (other than your guide). While the Porcupine Islands are a dramatic paddling experience Ironbound Island is epic in scale. The two-mile eastern shore of this island is composed of towering cliffs that drop right to the sea with many caves, arches and other stunning geological formations.

From Ironbound we will paddle along Grindstone Neck on our way to Winter Harbor. The mountains of Acadia just get more spectacular the further away you get. Not to mention ledges where seals often haul out at low tide. The wildlife we are likely to see on the way include harbor seals, harbor porpoise, bald eagles, osprey, double crested cormorants, black guillemots, and maybe even a whale.

While in Winter Harbor there are a variety of activities. You might choose to stay and enjoy some quiet time on the porch of the Captain Lyde’s house, or venture out to explore Schoodic Peninsula. In the village there are restaurants both casual and finer dining. For activities in the area there are tours and tasting at the Bartlett's Winery, also tours at the Grindstone Neck of Maine gourmet seafood smokehouse. Not to mention more areas of Acadia National Park, that can be explored either on the Island Explorer or in our van.

Accommodations provided by Main Stay Cabins. Captain Lyde’s house has a soft, gray weathering of the cedar shingles which is accented by crisp, white trim and wicker on the lower and second floor decks. This four-bedroom home has three bathrooms and custom cabinets in the modern kitchen all overlooking Henry’s Cove and Mark Island Lighthouse. By having our kayaking guest staying together in this one home, we are able to provide this multi-day sea kayaking adventure at a very reasonable rate.
